Copper Brass Instruments

Discover our revolutionary innovations: the trumpet La Rossa and the new double horn – both completely free of lead and nickel. These instruments represent a true world premiere, combining cutting-edge material development with traditional master craftsmanship. As the only manufacturer worldwide offering instruments of this kind, we can proudly say—based on numerous comparison tests with top professional musicians—that our instruments rank among the very best in the world.

Built on the foundation of our successful models, every component has been completely redesigned. Instead of brass or nickel silver containing potentially harmful substances, we use pure copper and specially developed bronze. The result is instruments that provide exceptional playing comfort, rich tonal quality, and safety for allergy sufferers. These instruments are not only a symbol of innovative brass craftsmanship but also set new standards in responsibility, quality, and forward-looking design.

World first: The first lead- and nickel-free double horn

We are proud to present our newly developed double horn – the world’s first fully lead-free and nickel-free instrument of its kind. This groundbreaking innovation is the result of over 180 years of craftsmanship and sets new standards in sound quality, playing comfort, and material safety. Our new double horn is designed for professional performance, yet equally suited for dedicated hobby musicians. Players with nickel allergies benefit especially from its specially engineered, allergy-friendly construction. It is currently the only horn worldwide that is purpose-built for allergy-sensitive musicians. In terms of sound, the instrument impresses with an exceptionally full and rich tone that remains clear, clean, and precise at all times. Its intonation is remarkably stable without requiring the player to “force” the notes. The horn responds with outstanding ease, making tone production feel almost effortless – even in demanding passages. We are truly proud to introduce this unique development to you – an instrument that combines tradition and innovation in an extraordinary way.

Trumpet „la rossa“ - The first lead and nickel free trumpet

With the „la rossa“, we present not only a new instrument but a true passion project and a revolution in brass instrument making: the world’s first completely lead-free and nickel-free trumpet. It combines masterful craftsmanship with sustainable thinking and genuine environmental awareness.

Based on our successful „caja“ model, the consistent redevelopment of all materials resulted in an instrument that sets new standards in sound, comfort, and responsibility. Instead of brass and nickel silver with high lead and nickel content, pure copper and a specially developed bronze are used. This makes „la rossa“ ideal for allergy sufferers and, at the same time, a symbol of forward-looking craftsmanship.

Tonally, it impresses with a brilliant yet warm sound that carries effortlessly across all registers. Its even, light response, perfect intonation, and impressive flexibility make it an extraordinary partner for the highest musical demands. Ergonomically shaped rings, developed in-house, ensure secure grip and optimal playing comfort.

The „la rossa“ has received multiple awards for innovation and quality: the Saxon Innovation Award 2023, the Saxon State Prize for Design 2023, the Saxon Environmental Award 2022, and the Bavarian State Prize for Outstanding Achievements in Craftsmanship 2025. An instrument that unites tradition and innovation, places sustainability at its core, and ranks among the world’s finest trumpets in its uniqueness.

Bavarian State Prize 2025

Honoured at the International Crafts Fair: Our nickel- and lead-free trumpet „la rossa“

A great honour for our „la rossa“ trumpet: Our family business Werner Chr. Schmidt Mundstücke und Metallblasinstrumente was awarded the Bavarian State Prize 2025 for this nickel- and lead-free instrument. The award ceremony took place at the International Crafts Fair in Munich, which was held from 12 to 16 March.

As a traditional Vogtland company, we are one of the 20 international prize winners and received the award in the technology category. The prize, endowed with 5000 euros, recognises the outstanding craftsmanship behind „la rossa“, which was developed by our master metal wind instrument maker Max Hertlein.

Our trumpet was also in the spotlight during the official media tour: Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) stopped by our stand and picked up the copper trumpet himself. With the right mouthpiece and the right instrument, he even managed to produce a clear sound - proof of the quality and easy playability of our new trumpet.

Also visiting our stand were film crews from the TV stations RTL, ZDF, n-tv and WELT.
